WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN THIS DREAM? / QUE HACES EN ESTE SUEÑO?

When I met the great writer Mario Vargas Llosa at Villa Josephine in Tanger, Morocco the first thing he said to me was “What are you doing in this dream?”
How romantic, how poetic, how beautiful, how unforgettable… And the truth is that the place was a dream indeed but what he was referring to is to the dream of life, because life is a dream… And like every dream, life is unexpected, uncontrollable, full of surprises and magic.

These past two weeks I have been under Damocles sword, it wasn’t easy imagining, thinking... that you might have to leave this dream sooner than you naturally expected to… But  no, no yet… I am so FORTUNATE because I am not leaving, I am staying here, dreaming, living, playing…

Today I want to share with you as well a fun story in a special place and this quote: “We don’t stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.” George Bernard Shaw.

As you can see I am still playing!!!

Carpe Diem and Happy Holidays

SYNCHRONICITY

I have been always fascinated by how everyday decisions could have a strong impact in our lives, like where do I have coffee this morning? Home, at the regular coffee shop or do I feel adventurous enough to explore a new one? If at a restaurant, in which table do I want to sit or should I just let the careless hostess sit me where she thinks it is the worst table in the house? If in a plane, how neurotic do I feel today? Do I want window or aisle, left or right side of the plane, in the front or in the back? Ahhhhhhhh… There are millions of choices everywhere and each one can bring you a totally different outcome.

New York as you might know is a waterhole of infinite possibilities; so sometimes is better to just let yourself go. The story of today happened because of a heap of circumstances… Like everything in life and why not maybe because of luck… Though I believe every man/woman has to make his/her own luck and I did, I made part of my luck that day by positioning myself in New York and the rest, is just pure coincidence or destiny or… Synchronicity!.

Although what happened didn’t have a strong impact in my life, it’s true that the outcome of this specific heap of circumstances brought to me an opportunity for an adventure… a theatrical one!

Where? : East Village
When? : End of summer 2006, a regular Sunday with hangover.
With whom I was hanging out? : I was with my inseparable friend the gorgeous and sexy Mariana Soares.
And what happened? : I met a great woman that helped me to get my first job as an actress in Broadway, well Off Off Broadway.

Heap of circumstances:

Thank god that I woke up that afternoon alive and with all my body parts after a night of perdition in the city that never sleeps.
Where do we meet? In the east or the west village?
We are starving, where do we go to eat? Turkish, Croatian, Italian, Vietnamese, Ethiopian? No way… Brazilian? Yes!
Do we want a table inside, outside or at the bar? Where there is less noise please.
What do we want to drink? Regular mighty caipiriñas or the special kiwiriña what the f… is that?
And everything that I chose, that we chose, took me to meet the greatest of all the flowers: LA GRAN Flor Minniti!!

Hope you like it!!!
Carpe Diem

I have lived in many places in NYC, from a hovel in Chinatown where mice used to dare to visit me in bed to a luxurious apartment in Battery Park City with spectacular Hudson River views.

During these 10 years in the city, I have lived in many hoods, East Village, Tribeca, West Village, Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village, Lower East Side, Greenwich Village… Each one with their genuine spirit and flavor.

I feel very lucky because I always lived in Manhattan and always below 20th street. But if you don’t have much money and want to live in the most expensive Island on earth, you could end up in some difficult, out of the ordinary, funny, rewarding, dangerous, traumatic, unforgettable… situations. But that’s life, an adventure. And I am still here and with many stories on my backpack from those situations I put myself in.

Today I am not going to tell you how I got bitten by a crazy roommate that jumped into my neck like a monkey to a tree, I am going to tell you the story of how the hell I manage to pay the ridiculous amount of $200 a month for a room in one of the most desired hoods in the world, West Village.

Thank you for being there. If you are thinking moving to NEW YORK, DO IT!!!! Now!!! Don’t worry, the jumping monkey roommate is living at the Zoo now and she’s not accepting more roommates.

Besos. Si estas pensando mudarte a New York, hazlo ahora, do it!! You can.

LUPINI, PEPITO AND ME

“Your audition for the movies started the day you were born. If you wind up on the screen, it’s because you’ve done something right since the cradle—and long before you ever made it to a producer’s office.”

This is how Michael Caine starts his book “Acting in Film”. And also in the very first page of the book he says another true fact:

“You never know when or how the people you meet are going to suddenly set off the chain reaction that will generate your break”.

In New York have happened to me many times, how what you thought it was an insignificant encounter or activity in the present time, will later, take you to unexpected situations that little by little will push you closer to your successful outcome. Like for example, how from seeing a filthy and dark room for rent, in a tiny apartment in Chinatown announced in the sublets section of craigslist, can become the first step of a stair that will take you, years later, to Hollywood to the glamorous "Night Before Party" at the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel, where you end up meeting an ICM agent that will introduce you to the producer of your next film… Endless opportunities, everywhere, but you have to be there and more importantly be ready. Weak people believe in luck, strong people make their own luck happen.

Here I tell you a story of how I met a very important person in my artistic career, the very talented and genuine director and writer Francisco Lupini. We made two films together and I know we will make many more! Viva Lupini!

Lupini, Pepito y Yo

"TO SUFFER LIKE FINGERS THAT NOT BLEED" was the first short we made together. Here it's the trailer and the entire film if you want to pic!

Y la segunda fue "BLACKOUT". And the second was "BLACKOUT". Espero que os guste! I hope you like it!

THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOE BUSINESS/ NO HAY NADA COMO EL SHOE BUSINESS

Nowadays I step with my red soles on Fifth Avenue, Sierpes Street or Sunset Boulevard but in the time of my life when I used to work in the job I will reveal with this post I didn’t even know who was Christian Louboutin or about his desired red soles, even though the job I was doing was totally related to the wonderful world of feet… and their attires.

A study by Kansas University discovered that the type of shoes we wear is an image of our personality and the truth is that I can tell you from my experience that not only the type of shoe but also the way we get it, taught me a lot about people, about our virtues and weaknesses.

Talking about weaknesses, I confess you that one of mine is my blind optimism and about virtues, it can be that I talk to the stones, meaning I talk to everyone, but more importantly I like to listen. I like to listen to people stories around the world and because my blog is about New York stories I am going to tell you one that a shoe professional told me once when we used to work together.

While we, my workmate and I, were waiting for feet to come in and get dressed by us at the elegant Fifth Avenue Store and after he confessed me how he came to America crossing through Nogales, Arizona, risking his life in order to win a better one, I asked him “Could you share any New York moment that you will never forget?”

And he told me this New York story: “It was Christmas Eve, it was bloody cold, but it didn’t mind because the Christmas spirit running all around warmed up every corner of the city that never sleeps. In that time I was working at the store in Rockefeller Center so every time I had a second to spare I couldn’t resist myself to look out the window to contemplate the great Rockefeller Christmas Tree.

But that day was different, because that day was the day of the year that my wife and two kids come to Manhattan to pick me up from work to go to see the tree and to walk around midtown all together. Yes that is all we do, look and walk… because that is the only thing we could really afford, look at the tree, take some pictures with the tree behind us and walk and walk and walk more… And for my family that was more than enough… but for me, I always think I wish I could give them a little bit more.  And fortunately that evening I could give them more, and how you might wonder. Because the magic of New York, the one that people talk so much about, touched me that evening and I won’t ever forget it.

It was 6 pm, time to leave work for me that day, my beautiful family waited for me outside the store, dressed with their best outfits, smiling impatiently for me to come out. We greeted each other with excitement and joy, we hold hands and started our Christmas Eve treat. We looked at the tree, took pictures and walked and walked taking in every gram of Christmas Spirit. Suddenly an old man, very well dressed, he looked like someone very very important, approached to me and gave me a red envelope and said  “Enjoy this with your beautiful family, Happy Christmas” and he left before I could thank him.

I opened the mysterious envelope and there they were, four tickets to go to the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show that very same night. I could not believe it! That was the first time I ever went to the theater in my life. I will never forget it but not because of that but because of the face of happiness my family had during the entire show.

When we arrived to the legendary Radio City, the ushers welcomed us like if we were royalty, they offered us a drink, folded my kid stroller and guided us to our privilege seats, in the middle of the second row. Wow! It was spectacular., magic, it was New York.”

And now after this unforgettable story I will tell you about my short experience in the Shoe Business with this video. Hope you like it. Gracias and Besos!!!

Gracias y besos.

WATSON, THE FLY AND ME

New York is a box of surprises, it never stops astonishing me. The story I am about to share with you today is one of those special pleasant moments the city gave me and it's deeply connected with me since my years as a Medicine student.

I still remember those New York Days in which I would wake up and I didn't know where the day was going to take me, you just had to let yourself go… Be open... Be free... Be brave… Be ready… Be in the moment…
And this story took many of those days to happen, hard work and of course, the magic of destiny.

Gracias to Alexis Gambis for believing in me, Doron Weber for his generosity, Dr. Watson for his genious and the fly for its sex appeal.

Enjoy!

MY WAY/ MI CAMINO

The way to HB Studio was long and difficult. But it was my way.

All started with the difficult task of telling your dad “Dad I want to be an artist”. And I can tell you that my dad, a very prestigious heart surgeon in Spain, is always or operating, or reading great literature or drinking a very very cold beer. I tried the three scenarios to tell him the exciting and shocking news but only one worked.

The scenario couldn’t be as dramatic as this:

INT. OPERATING ROOM – AFTERNOON

A patient half asleep lies on a stretcher, there is a surgical drape on top of his chest blocking his view to his insensible limbs, where Dr. Roman Senior and Dr. Roman Junior are operating on. There is a theater nurse standing next to the patient’s feet and an anesthetist sitting on a chair next to the door reading the sport magazine.

Both Doctors Roman, dad and daughter, dressed in green scrubs, totally sterilized from head to toe, are focused on the surgical site. Dr. Roman Senior asks to the nurse for surgical suture “Prolene 3-0 please”, when Dr. Roman Junior says “I am leaving the Medicine for the theater”.

CUT

As you can imagine he didn’t throw me the scalpel because the patience was only anesthetized from the abdomen to the feet!

The patient survived and he is now my fan, I came to New York to become an actress and my dad, though in the beginning was tough to accept such a dramatic decision, now awaits proud not only to walk with me along the red carpets but to be in one of my movies!

Here I tell you a story that happened to me at HB STUDIO. Hope you enjoy it!!! Thank you for being there!

THE CARLYLE AND ME

The Carlyle Hotel is not only where I like to go to drink my Grey Goose dirty martinis straight up with Olives sitting at the Bemelmans bar and get seduced by its unmistakable charm. The Carlyle is something else. The Carlyle is the place for stories to happen, for stories to be heard and for stories to be told.

Besides high spirits The Carlyle gave me a lot of magic, becoming one of my favorite places in the city. There I bumped into Mick Jagger when I was on my way out to enjoy a Nat Sherman between martinis, but I could not get more Satisfaction than when I listened to a genius playing the clarinet in the company of my parents and brothers, or when I got to share unforgettable laughs and anecdotes with Geoffrey Rush and his acting teacher while we were getting almost hypnotized by the melodies the pianist was so generously giving to us, or when I had caviar and champagne very late into the night  with a group of dreamers, or when I got the opportunity to go to live in Hollywood for the first time, or when I had the chef from Rao’s cooking for me and other select guests, the famous penne vodka meatballs, at one of its luxury apartments, or when I walked through the back doors like Marilyn used to do, or when I learned why actors are actors from another fellow, whom I admire tremendously, Tony Roberts, or when my friend Antonio cuts my hair at the private hair salon in the second floor like if I was a movie star already, or when my friend Barry treats me to the finest lunches in the city at its elegant restaurant… And we’re not over yet, the history between The Carlyle and Me has just started. But for now I believe that under The Carlyle ceilings I did enjoy life like there is no tomorrow!!!
Gracias to The Carlyle.

And here I tell you the story of the first time I landed at this special place. Thank you for keep reading and watching!

My first night in the city I slept in a loft in Tribeca but the others were not as glamorous. My second night was in a super cheap hostel in East Village, on 12th street between First and A Avenue, where I stayed in a room with two bunk beds and slept on the top bunk of one of them, listening to Frank Sinatra on my walkman and dressed in my jeans because my suitcase was broken and could not open it.

The third night I slept in the same hostel, but this time in a room full of bunk beds and because I forgot to tell them I was staying one more night and there was no other space available, they put me on a thin mattress on the floor. Next morning, I remember opening my eyes and seeing on top of me two pair of bare feet hanging out. Two giants were sleeping on the bunk bed next to me and their feet stuck out and told me "Welcome to New York Paula!!!".

The fourth and fifth night I slept like a queen in the attic of the house of my first friend in the city, in Upstate New York. From there, I slept for a week on the couch of what it became my first room in a New York City apartment. That happened to be next to the hostel. Once I got my room there I slept on the floor until I could find a mattress in Craigslist. How naïve I was that I didn’t realize that the former roommate would take the bed with her. In this first apartment I lived with two fun men till I could not afford it any longer, exactly 4 months, and from there I have lived in 8 apartments more, including one month in New Jersey, but that's another story.

Through those apartments I have the opportunity to explore many neighborhoods, specifically and in this order, East Village, Chinatown, Lower East Side, West Village, Stuyvesant Town in the East Side, Greenwich Village, Tribeca and Battery Park City. Where I lived with all kind of people or animals. Every building, every door, every apartment, every room, every view, every roommate, every neighbor, gave me something. Sometimes they gave me something special, sometimes they gave me nightmares, but what it’s true is that all of them are part of my New York Stories.

Here I tell you a story that happened to me in one of those apartments. I titled it "WHO CRIES AT NGHT? I hope you like it.
Thank you Gary for being the spontaneous camera man in this video.

Me estaban diciendo "Bienvenida a Nueva York Paula".

FRIENDS

Heidegger said that “Language is the house of being” And now I ask myself, what happens when you speak two languages? Do you have two houses?
After ten years of having two houses in my mind, I have to confess that there is nothing like your homeland. Spanish language is my mother tongue. It is the language with which I learned to be a person and that is something that I can’t take away from my soul, despite the fact that I live, dream, think, get angry or love in another language.
That explains why after living many years in the States, most of my friends speak Spanish, though I got married to an American, my gringo, but that is another story that I will tell you another day.
Today I want to tell you that I feel nostalgic not only because I leave the city I adore but because I leave behind a family of friends.  So I wanted to do a tribute to all my friends in New York and especially to my first and my best friend in the city.
From my third day in Manhattan, Antonio Diaz, opened to me not only his Spanish house in Upstate better knows as “El Cortijo”, but his friends, his family, his New York life, in short he gave me his heart and of course I gave him mine. In ten years of FRIENDSHIP, he gave me advice when I was a little chic running lost around the concrete jungle, he has seen me grow personally and professionally, he has taught me, he has reprimanded me, he has guided me, he has loved me… Antonio, I have no words to tell you how important you have been for me these unforgettable years of challenge, dreams, preparation, change, life…
I can’t conceive New York without you. Gracias friend. I love you like the female trout to the male trout.

MY FIRST NIGHT IN THE CITY/MI PRIMERA NOCHE EN LA CIUDAD

I will never forget my first night in New York City. Since I was a little girl, I always dreamt to come to New York, to the city that I always saw in the movies, the city where everything happens, the city where the most important people in the planet live at least a period of their lives, the city of the skyscrapers, the city of Broadway, the city of Frank Sinatra, the city of Wall Street, the city of the winners, the city of the thinkers, the city of the risk-takers, the city of the Statue of Liberty, the city of my dreams…
Who was going to tell me that rainy summer night when I arrived with my broken suitcase and a ticket to come back in a month, that this city was going to become nothing less than my home for ten amazing years.

Today I tell you the story of my first night in New York, where I slept and how did I get there!!!
I hope you like it!
Gracias

BROADWAY (ENGLISH)

I have the amazing privilege of living Broadway and Off Broadway to the fullest. Since I lost my Broadway virginity with the play “A Streetcar Named Desire”, I have seen many of my favorite plays onstage like “Who Is Afraid of Virgina Woolf” with Kathleen Turner and Bill Irwin, “The Seagull” with Dianne West and Alan Cumming, “Hedda Gabler” with Cate Blanchett, “Glengarry Glen Ross” with Alan Alda to name a few… I have been a proud witness of riveting performances from actors that I admire tremendously, like Al Pacino in “The Merchant of Venice”, Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline in “Mother courage and her children”, Geoffrey Rush in “Exit the King” and many more. I even went to the Tony Awards that are happening tonight!  I enjoyed jaw dropping musicals like “Billy Elliot” or “West Side Story” or the one I saw this week "Lady Day". I have had the honor of discovering new plays like "Doubt" or “Venus in Fur”, I have experienced interactive theater like “Sleep no more” and I can mention shows till tomorrow. Thank you Broadway, I have learned a lot by been sitting in the dark but where an actress really learns is by being onstage but that is another story that I will tell you another day!

Thank you for been there! I hope you like the story of the first time I went to a Broadway show. Sorry for the sound, next videos will be better! This is Spanish gorilla style!

WHAT AM I DOING?

27 New York Days                                                                                                                                        27 New York Stories

On July 27th 2004 I embarked myself in one of the biggest adventures of my life. I left my world as Dr. Roman in Madrid to come to New York City to pursue my dream of becoming an actress.

I didn’t really know anyone in the city and when I took my first yellow cab at JFK I didn’t even know where I was going to sleep that rainy summer night, I only knew that I did it, that I was in New York City.

It was a real adventure, a journey to the unknown, a gift to my soul and a headache for my parents that thought I was going to have a normal life when I graduated from Medicine School.

My luck was that my dad is a heart surgeon so I knew that if my mother had had a heart attack the evening I announced I was leaving my pink stethoscope for the stage, she would have survived with my dad there, after all, beta blockers in my home are like goldfish in yours.

Well, my family survived and we enjoyed New York together like there is no tomorrow and I become an actress, writer and producer and other things even more important. And now ten years have passed and of course many stories have happened to me in this magic Island, known as Manhattan.  So let’s remember some of them…

Let’s remember the city that gave me joy and misery, pleasure and pain, success and failure, love and hate, glamour and shit, hope and despair, passion, a lot, but never indifference because that would be the opposite of life and if this city has something special is LIFE, the city is ALIVE every corner you go, you can feel the Energy of millions of hearts walking around you, pumping more than just blood, pumping dreams, ambitions, wishes of a better life…

New York, I adore you,                                                                                                                            New York Gracias                                                                                                                                 New York this is not a Bye, Bye!                                                                                                          But a “See you later alligator”
